Who Will Benefit From This Conference?

Women and Men interested in learning how to achieve optimum health and longevity throughout their lives by educating them in matters affecting their health.  You’re invited to join us as we learn about Rheumatoid Arthritis, SLE Lupus and other autoimmune disorders, hormonal health for MEN & WOMEN, community fitness & nutrition, knee surgery treatment options and gender differences, colorectal cancer & how physical illness affects mental wellness.

Health Care Professionals-Continuing education units will be offered to Healthcare professionals, Physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, psychologists, dentists, hygienists, dental assistants, dietitians, radiologic technologists, occupational therapists, mental health professionals and other healthcare professionals who are interested in providing their patients with direction and information on how to achieve and maintain physical and mental health.

David F. LaPatka, MD, FACS

Topics: Advances in facial plastic surgery


For more than twenty years, David F. LaPatka, MD, FACS has headed up the distinguished Facial Plastic Surgery Center at Sansum Clinic. He has successfully performed thousands of surgical and non-surgical corrections of the skin, forehead, brow, eyelids, nose, cheeks, chin, and neck. Dr. LaPatka's experience and expertise have earned him national recognition including designation as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and membership in the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He lectures frequently on advances in facial plastic surgery, and has been appointed to the publication committee of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is the former chairman of the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Department of Otolaryngology, and was recently named one of the Best of the Best Facial Plastic Surgeons in Santa Barbara by the Santa Barbara News-Press Reader's Poll.

Donald O. Lyman, MD, DTPH (London)

Donald O. Lyman, MD, DTPH, currently serves as Chief of The Division of Chronic Disease and Injury Control in the California Department of Health Services (CDHS).  This Division addresses prevention of the leading causes of death, illness, disability and medical care costs.  It houses the State’s premier Tobacco Control Program (realized a 40% reduction in smoking rates, a 65% reduction in tobacco consumption and a 26% decrease in tobacco related cancer rates), a Statewide Cancer Registry, control Programs directed to cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and a host of other categorical prevention Programs.  It is now working on public health’s interface with the medical care industry to realize the potential benefits of prevention in the Managed Care setting.

Dr. Lyman received his BA in chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania, his MD from Yale University and DTPH from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.  He did his residency training at the Universities of Miami (Florida) and UCSD. He has worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in various state (California and New York), national and international capacities.  He has been the disease control officer (“State Epidemiologist”) for both New York and California and has been with the CDHS since 1978.

Robert A. Greene, M.D.

Topics: Perfect Balance Hormonal Health for MEN, WOMEN & pregnancy

Robert A. Greene received his bachelor’s degree and subsequently his medical degree from Ohio State University. Dr. Greene is certified by the both American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) and the ABOG Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Fertility. He is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.  Dr. Greene is affiliated with UC-Davis Medical Center as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. He is also serves as an ad hoc reviewer for Obstetrics and Gynecology, focusing primarily on studies involving the hormone-brain relationship. His educational activities include a very active lecture schedule, targeting diverse audiences from OB/GYN’s and Family Practice Providers to Neurologists and Psychiatrists on subjects ranging from sexual dysfunction and chronic pelvic pain to managing migraine headaches and epilepsy. Dr. Greene has published numerous articles in the medical/scientific literature. More recently, he provided assistance to Suzanne Somers and wrote the forward for her book, The Sexy Years, in addition to writing his own book, Perfect Balance: Breakthrough Program for Finding the Lifelong Hormonal Health You Deserve.

Bevra Hahn, M.D.

Topics: Lupus and Autoimmune Diseases

Bevra H. Hahn is Professor of Medicine, Vice-Chair of the Department of Medicine, and Chief of Rheumatology at the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California Los Angeles, where she has been since 1983. A summa-cum-laude graduate of Ohio State University, Dr. Hahn received her medical degree from Johns Hopkins.  She has been elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha, the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars, and the Association of American Physicians. In 1995 she was elected as a member of the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars. She did an internship and residency in medicine in St. Louis at Barnes Hospital, Washington University. She is past-president of the American College of Rheumatology and has just been elected Master of that organization.  Among her awards are the Dunlop-Dottridge Award of the Canadian Rheumatism Association for research in rheumatology, the Joseph Bunim Medal and prize of the American College of Rheumatology, the Holley Research prize in Rheumatology, the Southern California Arthritis Foundation's Klinenberg Medal for Arthritis Research, the Carol-Nachman International Award for Rheumatology Research, and the Jane Wyman Humanitarian Award. Dr. Hahn has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed research papers and over 40 book chapters or reviews as well as serving as co-editor of an influential textbook Dubois’ Lupus Erythematosus. She has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Annals of Internal Medicine and Annals of Rheumatic Diseases. Her current research at the Laboratory for Lupus Research at UCLA includes investigations in genetics, pathogenesis, atherosclerosis,  and treatment of lupus. The laboratory is funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Arthritis Foundation (National and Southern California Chapters), the American College of Rheumatology/Research Education Foundation, the Dorough Foundation, the Lupus Research Institute, a Lupus Clinical Trials Center award, and private donors including Bertram Maltz, MD, Bud and Marla Paxson, Roger and Carolyn Horchow, and Jeanne Rappaport.

Uma M. Rao, M.D.

Topics: Life Can Be Beautiful After a Cancer Diagnosis

Dr. Uma Rao is the Medical Director of First Health Medical Center of Fresno, Inc. and Mystique Medical Spa. She is a four year survivor of breast cancer and has a special interest in breast cancer education and awareness. She is very interested in stressing the importance of eating well and exercising to increase the quality of life during and after cancer treatment. She received a B. S. in biochemistry at UC Riverside, attended medical school at Bangalore University and did an internship at St Vincent’s Hospital in New York. She did her residency in Internal Medicine at UCSF, Fresno Campus and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine.

Peter T. Simonian, M.D.

Topic: Knee Injuries in Women

Dr. Peter Simonian is a nationally renowned orthopedic Sports Medicine Specialist. Raised in Fresno, CA, Dr. Simonian came back to the Valley from Washington with his wife and two daughters. Dr. Simonian has been Chief of the Sports Medicine Clinic, as well as the Director of Sports Medicine Research and an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He has served as the Team Physician for the University of Washington Husky Intercollegiate Athletics Department and a consulting physician to the National Football League’s Seattle Sea Hawks. He has also performed a similar role with the New York Mets, Major League baseball club. His research has resulted in more than 150 publications in the most prestigious American and international journals and he holds patents for ACL surgical methods. He is an editor of both a leading knee journal and textbooks. Dr. Simonian directs the Sports Medicine Program of Community Medical Centers and is a Clinical Professor at University of California San Francisco.

Jeffrey Weitzel, M.D.

Topic: Colorectal cancer genetics and awareness

Jeffrey N. Weitzel, MD is the director of the Department of Clinical Cancer Genetics and the Cancer Screening & Prevention Program at the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in Duarte, California.  Dr. Weitzel is Board Certified in clinical genetics and medical oncology, as well as internal medicine and hematology, and he is an Associate Professor of Oncology at the City of Hope and a Clinical Associate Professor of Preventive Medicine at the University of Southern California School of Medicine. Dr. Weitzel earned his bachelor of science degree, in microbiology at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, and later earned his medical doctorate from the University of Minnesota Medical School, Minneapolis. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and Clinics, and served as a research fellow in the Hematology Department at Royal Postgraduate Medical School at Hammersmith Hospital, London, U.K.  He subsequently completed Hematology, Medical Oncology and Clinical Genetics Fellowships at the New England Medical Center, Boston, where he was an Assistant Professor of Medicine and of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Weitzel’s multidisciplinary clinical, research, and training programs emphasize translational research in genetic cancer risk assessment, chemoprevention, psychosocial and clinical outcomes research, and the major focus in the laboratory is on molecular oncology and women's cancers.  He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and serves on the Cancer Prevention subcommittee.  He is also a member of the NCCN Genetics/Familial Risk Assessment practice guidelines committee.

Dr. Weitzel is the principal investigator for the City of Hope Cancer Genetics Education Program and for the Cancer Genetics Career Development Program, which are funded by the National Cancer Institute.

Stefani Booroojian

Mistress of Ceremonies

At a station already known for its broadcasting icons, Stefani Booroojian remains one of the most recognizable names in KSEE 24 News history. Stefani feels fortunate to be part of such a rich broadcasting tradition in her hometown. For the magic number of 24 years Stefani Booroojian has been bringing the news to Valley viewers. Over that span of time she has witnessed and reported on tremendous changes and events in the Central Valley. While monitoring the daily news Stefani’s number one responsibility, watching out for people’s health and well being has been most rewarding. Stefani’s pursuit of women’s health issues remains critical. She has been instrumental in bringing KSEE 24’s Buddy Check program to the Central Valley. The on-going outreach has been credited with saving lives through its early detection methods and research updates in the fight against breast cancer. Stefani has been at the KSEE 24 News since 1982, at the anchor desk since 1984 and joins Rich Rodriquez at 6pm, 10pm and 11pm. weeknights. The two were voted most popular newscasters in Central California. Stefani brings award winning experience to the news team with significant community and industry recognition. Two Emmy’s and a distinguished media service award from Fresno State University are part of her professional portfolio. Broadcast news has been a large part of Stefani’s life for a quarter century, yet she still insists her greatest joy is spending time with her husband and two children in a wonderful place called Central California.
